Powerpuff Yourself was a global digital experience that invited fans to see themselves inside an iconic franchise. Built as a highly expressive avatar system, the project balanced brand fidelity, inclusive design, and scalable customization, resulting in tens of millions of avatars created, hundreds of customization options, and a campaign that trended #1 worldwide. The experience became a cultural moment by allowing fans of all backgrounds to participate, share, and emotionally connect with the Powerpuff Girls in a way the brand had never offered before.
Designing Powerpuff Yourself
Insight
Fans had long identified themselves as Blossom, Buttercup, or Bubbles based on personality rather than appearance. However, the characters’ highly specific designs limited how fully people could see themselves reflected on screen.
Design Philosophy
The goal was to preserve the instantly recognizable Powerpuff silhouette while removing barriers to self-identification. We started with a reduced, iconic base and layered in customization intentionally. Color, shape language, hair, clothing, and accessories were designed as modular components that expanded expression without breaking brand integrity.
Process and Validation
Inclusion was designed, not assumed. Characters were built for everyone in the room, then expanded through edge-case testing, celebrity recreations, and real-world references. When gaps surfaced, new elements were added until the system felt complete, ensuring an experience that was playful, affirming, and flexible at scale.
Impact and Reception
Powerpuff Yourself was widely celebrated for its inclusive approach to self-expression, earning praise from fans, press, and cultural commentators. The experience drove tens of millions of avatar creations and mass social sharing, becoming a global conversation around representation in fandom and design. Beyond scale, what resonated most was the emotional response. Fans felt seen, included, and joyfully invited into the Powerpuff world.
Quiz and Personality
Powfactor extended Powerpuff Yourself by translating visual customization into personality. Through a short, playful quiz, fans answered value-based questions that mapped to the spirit of Blossom, Buttercup, or Bubbles.
Each result combined character customization, animated icon worlds, and color-coded motion into a social-first output designed for easy sharing.
Icon System
Icons were designed as a shared visual language to express personality through simple, emotionally legible forms.Starting as hand-drawn sketches, they relied on silhouette, color, and motion to communicate attitude rather than literal meaning, remaining clear at small sizes and flexible across digital and physical environments.
Icon Outcomes
Final icons were paired with color-coded backgrounds and motion styles to form distinct visual worlds for Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles, making each personality outcome immediately legible without relying on text.
Powfactor Pop-Up Experience
The Powfactor Pop-Up brought Powerpuff Yourself into the physical world, allowing fans to turn their digital characters into wearable expressions. Visitors created their Powerpuff character on site and had it printed live on shirts, sweatshirts, baseball tees, or totes, transforming a digital identity into something tangible and personal.
The experience extended the personality system through Powfactor patches tied to Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles, packaged in color-coded cards that defined each trait. Bold Powerpuff Girl sculpts and a fully wrapped exterior turned the Soho storefront into an unmistakable brand moment, drawing lines out the door as fans embraced a real-world version of their Powerpuff identity.
